i got an old computer from a friend (sony vaio, no os installed)
i am new to linux so i thought id install dsl as an os on it. it will boot from the live cd just fine but i cant seem to install
(understand) how to install it so it will boot with out the disc. ive tried apps>tools>install and apps>tools>frugal install GRUB. on the later of the two it says there not a linux partition. Is there a way to make this happen? Thanks.

Login as root on the shell, either by using the sudo command or entering a root shell.  Run cfdisk and create a partition on your hard drive for linux.  Once you reach that stage, you're golden.

You might have figured this out already.  If you see a file cabinet icon click on it and emelfm shows your directories and if you have a floppy in the drive just right click on the floppy directory and choose mount.  If you did a frugal install it might be under /mnt/auto/floppy.  A usb drive is usually found under /mnt/sda1
