From what little googling I have done , there are issues with that particular audio chipset.. ( Oh Joy ! ) But not all is lost..
Most articles state that even with the oss drivers loaded, ( the via82cxxx.o ) the sound quality is poor..
Try using the alsadebs.dsl package in the repository. Read the info file carefully, and remember to add the "alsa" command to your startup commands if your running liveCD or poorman's.. Add the "alsa" command to your lilo.conf, and rerun lilo if using a frugal/HDInstall.
I'd experiment with a liveCD FIRST, before editing your HDInstal, just to test.. From what I've read, the alsa drivers are a MUCH better choice..
For starters, paste up your lsmod, and lspci in this thread, so we can see WHAT has been autodetected so far..
