Just installed DSL to my hard drive after being impressed with its appearance and also its minute space it takes up on the HD. WAs sick of other demo CDs and Linux distros that all insisted at least 2gb was needed.

My question, I used the Knoppix demo Cd before and my NTL modem which I have connected through USB as my network card doesn't seem to be detected (the USB was detected using Knoppix) doesn't work.

The USB light on the modem comes on so I'm guessing DSL isn't picking it up as a comunication device of some sort. Are there any settings I can modify or is it a lot more complicated?

My intention is to use DSL as the OS for my webserver, which will eventually be running apache, php and mySQL known as a LAMP system I'm sure you all know.

While on this subject, my network cards will need to be functioning for me to be connecting this to my XP machine (this one).

The cards are:

PCI = Model NetGear FA311NIC

ISA1 = 3COM EtherLink III Network Card 3C509B-C
ISA2 = DataLink DL2518 Rev B1

Hi there,

I'm presently sitting on my linux box (Mandrake 9.2) direct onto the NTL modem (via LAN). I think the machine is just set to DCHP. Of courrse I had to setup the modem first on a windows machine, but after that any machine with DCHP should work, even worked on my DSL laptop.

Ok, I am using my NTL modem now on my windows machine and I've been through the NTL setup things on this before.

Maybe I'm not doing it right. To get to any sites I'm trying to use Dillo, which when I type in an address or clcik and of the links down the left hand side, it says error cannot conect to server or something like that in the status bit at the bottom of the window.

What is the process to setting my modem to work? Also, what is the method for getting my settings stored? Like using enhanced mode? Sorry if I sound new, I am. First Linux install I've done, tried many, like Debian (driver nightmare with that one) and Knoppix (HD space problems). Got otehrs too like Peanut (bad download) and Mandrake and Red Hat 8, all of which seem to need to be drastically pruned before I can run it.

Anotehr question, which firewall do you use? I have downloaded Bulldog, but it says that it needs something like 2gb of free space to initiate some files it will download from Sun I think.  :(

Erm I'm not the linux expert either I'm afraid :S

We are running Smotthwall 2.0 as our file wall (on an old P200).

AFAIK, once oyu have install the modem and the NTL network has its address, you should be able to use DCHP on any machine (inc a firewall) and access the internet with it. Sometime you do need to reboot the machine, so it picks up newer details form the modem.

TO be quite honest I'm not sure how, but It just works.

Hope this is helping in some way :S
