I have just put DSL on my HD, i figured my modem wasn't working because I was running it off a CD, but it still doesn't work, this is also my first\second day using DSL, so far I like it...but have no idea what I am doing, and windows is easier to play around with....when it's not crashing or freezing. I use AOL, and have a 56K modem. it offers more places than I have for the manual selection, I have tried all 4 of those, all have the same answer.

Glad you're trying DSL and Linux :)

2 things:

1) you most likely have an internal winmodem.  These are software controlled modems that are, or course, designed for windows.  In many cases, they will work with linux but take some work most of the time.  Tell us your modem type and we can go from there.

2) you are on AOL.  AOL has their own dialer to get on their network.  As far as I know, AOL under linux is not possible. BUT, hopefuly someone will correct me if I am wrong. (I discoverd this When I was on AOL).
