Boot with a normal res, then edit home/dsl/.xserverrc, changing the res to the one you want. Alt-Ctrl-Backspace to exit X, then type startx to restart the X server. Hopefully it works (works with my new widescreen lappie, booted 1024x768, changed to 1280x800, restart X and it works fine). Then if you backup .xserverrc, it should boot with this setting.
