Hmmm, that shouldn't be an issue at all. Did you run xsetup.sh? You can run it as a cheatcode when you boot. http://damnsmalllinux.org/wiki/index.php/Cheat_Codes
Or you can hit ctrl-alt-backspace to kill X. At the console prompt, type xsetup.sh (and enter). Answer the questions. When you get to another console prompt, type startx (and enter).
