I booted with the dsl no fstabs and I still see some but fewer errors and the sdb entry /mnt/sdb went away.  My guess is the card reader on the Brother MFC printer is the cause.  Knoppix installer is trying to read or mount the fax memory or something inside the printer.  It's interesting but all seems to work anyway.  I have gotten the Brother MFC to work with CUPs and Brother's linux drivers with FC4 and Debian Etch but I suspect I would have problems with DSL 4.2.  I see the errors with 3.2 but not 2.1 or DSL-N.  Thanks for all you help.  I bought the book too.
