Usually computers that are too old for PCI do not have integrated networking, but it is possible.

Digital Equipment Corp once made a 486-33 thin PC that contained integrated NIC and SCSI port for expansion.

Google is your friend...

This thread has some links to the HP website for Compaq Deskpro EP/SP drivers.

They mention drivers for both 3com 3c905 and Intel PRO/100 network chipsets.

thanks guys i think the easiest way for me would be just to go ahead and buy a new network card since all i have to do is plug it in . i am really not into computers that much and i dont think i would have the guts to open the computer up to look for the card model but i'll try everything else that will seem to work maybe i can get soemeone to open it up  and check it out for me. though i think thats gonna take some time.

It might just be easier to buy a cheap PCI network card and use it instead.

Oops, I did totally miss the model info from your previous post.  I skipped right past it and went straight at the lspci stuff. Thanks rja

Here is another attempt at a solution.

Open an xterminal and type:

sudo su
modprobe e100
modprobe 3c59x
modprobe tlan

netcardconfig
exit
exit

Good luck.
