I've fiddled around with 1.1, .2, and .3 so far and think it's a sweet distro, but I have had one serious issue with it.

DSL seems to have a nasty habit of freezing when I've run it on my laptop.  I've been running it toram, but usually within half a hour it just freezes solid and I have to physically power down and reboot.  I have 512mb of ram and a 2.8 Celeron, so I don't see how I could be running out of resources so fast.  With 1.1 and 1.2 it would inevitably freeze if I walked away and let it sit for 15 minutes (roughly) but the other night 1.3 froze solid right in front of me after only having been booted less than a half an hour, which was a new occurance.

What the heck is happening?  I really want to use this distro more, but but using it in 20 minute increments isn't an option!  :)  What forum would be best to ask more about this in?

Matt

I had a similar problem when I first started usiing DSL on my laptop.  I had it installed on my hard drive.  However my hard drive eventually died.  I replaced the hard drive with an IDE to CF adapter and a 500Mb CF.  I have not had a moments trouble since.  I think my hard drive was intermittantly failing and causing the problem before it finally died completely.

I don't know how you are running DSL, but I just thought I would relay my experiences just in case you might have the same problem.

I boot from the CD into the ramdisk with the 'toram' boot option.

Would mounting the partitions on the laptop harddrive cause these this problem?  DSL mounts them all in a snap (XP, linux, fat32) so I hadn't really seen that as a problem.

I don't know if that would cause your laptop to freeze or not.  However, if your hard drive is easily removable, you could remove it and just run with the live cd and ram for a while as an experiment and see if it still freezes.

If it still freezes, at least you have eliminated your hard drive as the source of the problem.  If the laptop does not freeze anymore, maybe it is the hard drive.

I think I will try running from the cd for a while and make sure not to mount any drives, or one or the other.  I will see if it locks up then.
