Much thanx to Hawki for posting and even more for installing Opera on DSL.
I have found my problem. It is being a Linux Newbie. I was not familiar with the constant nuisance of "multi-user logins". When I started using DSL i just hit return at the boot prompt. This logs you in as "root". as far as the DSL BACKUP feature is concerned. So then when you do a RESTORE you get folders owned by "root" which cannot be opened by user "DSL" thus making the RESTORE rather worthless. Seems to me any BACKUP should assign ownership to "DSL" since RESTORE kinda forces you to login as "DSL"......
Does this deserve attention from Andrews?
I am well aware of .filetool.lst. I have a Windows boot floppy with a very small DSL backup.tar.gz as well as necessary Windows boot files [[cant print without Windows and always seem to need floppy to boot]] plus Neil Faulks remarkable "V1" DOS file viewer /file manager. All on one crowded boot disk. Requires very small backup file for DSL
Thanx again for your posts.
