If it boots with lilo, then it should go directly to X after lilo times out or you hit the enter key. That's what it has to do to run fluxbox. so I guess I don't understand your problem.

When dsl boots, it goes to a login prompt at the command line...I can login with dsl or root then it goes into fluxbox.

Sounds like you need a login manager.

Try kdm: apt-get install kdm
