I thinking of installing xfree86 to make use of my pc's graphic card.

putting aside the horrors I've had with xfree86 on other past distros, I'm wondering if there's any downside to this.

The current vesa (non xfree86) mode works with all of the 5 pcs I use my pendrive with.

If I manage to install a specific driver for one of them, what will happen to when I run dsl on another machine? Is there anyway I can get dsl to ignore xfree86 on boot? will the vga= cheatcode do this ?and revert back to vesa mode?

You could just not install xfree if you have trouble with it.

If this is not an option (traditional harddrive install, for example), then you can run xsetup to get back to xvesa.  It will rewrite your .xserverrc and then XFree will be ignored when you restart x.

tks mikshaw, nice to know of an easy way back.

Folks, I seem to remember xfree86 also has a vesa driver. Would that be the same as the one dsl uses, or would the performance be better ? Also how does openGL fit into all of this?
