Writing to NTFS isn't supported, because you risk destroying all data in the NTFS-partition. (Microsoft keeps the exact workings of NTFS a secret, so is has been difficult to make proper NTFS-write support for linux)
Having said this, there is a CAPTIVE NTFS for linux, which copies the windows NTFS drivers from installed windows and uses those. Dont know if anyone has ported it to DSL yet?
I have also heard, that the new KNOPPIX 5.0 supports writing to NTFS, so maybe the problem is finally solved?
Linux ext2 and ext3 filesystems are now R/W accessible from windows http://www.fs-driver.org/
