I was trying to download and install JDE and all of its required packages and then install them using synaptic, so I marked JDE (which marked the other packages as well) and then encountered an error (after downloading all of the packages) at the first part of installation. Here was part of the error message:

Never mind, I tried ctrl c and it shut out, but the problem was something with the description file (ends after some more stuff with .deb) and it tried to then overwrite some file, but could not, and stopped the installation.

Any suggestions?

Well I tried marking the packages again and I get a pop up window with an error (error code 1 I believe), but now my terminal error is back (I copied from my screen on my other computer [by typing alot  :D ]):

Code Sample

Unpacking fileutils (from .../fileutils_4.1-10_i386.deb) ...

dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/fileutils_4.1-10_i386.deb (--unpack):

trying to overwrite '/bin/chgrp', which is also in package coreutils

dpkg - deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)

Errors were encountered while processing:

/var/cache/apt/archives/fileutils_4.1-10_i386.deb

Any suggestions?  :)

Problems with the cache.

Run dselect, reset the sources and try again.

Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

Is the error in synaptic that I keep getting.  I tried what you said, and all of the packages are actually unmarked whenever I go to synaptic, but it goes to the internet download screen (after I mark them again), then starts the error message.  I think that the packages are downloaded but just can not install.

Thanks professor for your input, you may be right, but I may be doing it wrong.  What exactly should I do in dselect (after I get to the screen)?

I tried looking at other forums (Ubuntu), and there was a similar problem with a firefox update, but what they did was uninstall the old firefox before installing the new one.  Do I have to do that with file-utils, emacs, etc?
