Yes, 64-bit cpu's are backwards compatible with 32-bit software (i.e. DSL) - and they both (intel and AMD) support the x86 architecture.

Yes other linux distros will work, you could also get the ones that are optimized for your cpu.

I use ubuntu as my daily desktop,there are also other flavors of ubuntu depending on what desktop you want. I alway's keep a eye at distowatch( http://distrowatch.com/ ) because i love trying different distro's or seeing if any distro's have improved, but in my case i'm a full blown addict i run through at least a 100 cdr pack a month. :D
