I tried it with gtk2 and abiword 2.2.7.
It  reacts just like any other program.

When I switch to sk it keeps using the us layout = the only change I noticed is, that when I run keyboard in dsl panel, there is sk keyboard chosen.

When I switch to czech layout I can use some accents,  but some characters seem not to be correctly displayed, like if there were  only french and german accents, but not the central european ones - in places, where those should be are some characters, which definitely don`t belong to central europe, like ø or è. This could probably be solved by setting proper charset and/or fonts.

My problem is, that sk keyboard layout is not working at all...
Now I`ve got some time to explore, so I`ll try to find some solution today.
If you`ve got any more ideas, please let me know.

The fact, that when I switch to sk layout nothing really happens, was completely wrong. My fault, sorry for wasting your time... In one of the howtos, which I found today I learned, that everybody here except for me knows, that to access national characters in linux key altgr is often used... What made me even more confused was the fact, that with cz layout I didn`t have to use altgr.

Also I found out, that the accent, which I was missing in xkeycaps is called caron and it is really missing..

Now I have to somehow change charset to iso8859-2 and get some fonts, which would support those characters.

Again, sorry to everybody, who wasted his/her time due to this and especially thanks to ^thehatsrule^ for spending his precious time trying to help me out!

Login scripts set CHARSET=iso8559-1
You can also fool around with LANG and the LC* type variables.  Don't know if the current fonts support it or not though.
