You could try the newer tinyx extensions, but if that doesn't work for you then you will have to get a full x server (XFree86 or xorg)

Only for older monitors that aren't capable of detecting supported modes.  But maybe now the software is intelligent enough to prevent it if it can't probe for those modes.
