...but what happens if the e2fsck warning is coming from your boot partition? On a usb boot I've been using a different usb boot device to e2fsck the first one and vice versa. On a frugal hd boot, I'm a little stuck because the only choice I have is via a "fromusb" floppy boot which takes ages...

The best senario is to use this combination to boot and check filesystem(s)

boot:  dsl 2 toram legacy base norestore checkfs

Apparently message was referring to hda2 (dsl image).
I've been running e2fsck on hda3 which is my persistent partition.
Warning line is now gone from boot screen.
