The mount tool does not recognize it, and when I try using /dev/sda1 as the device I get "not a valid block device."

dmesg shows that it is recognized, although there is a message:

I'll google that error, but if anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate it.

did you have any luck with this?  I'm attempting to do a similar thing (connect a USB HDD so I can then install DSL to it).
