I had the same issue on a newer HP computer. I downloaded the syslinux iso and burned that. I booted to failsafe, which got me to the desktop and then configured my ethernet card from the main menu.   And here I am.   If this works for you too, you can optomize your graphics settings later.   One other note, if you are running XP, it is un-wise to try and write to the NTFS partition or the Fat32 restore partition if you want to save anything. You would have to re-partition (or find ) an alternative Fat32 or Fat16 partition and write to that instead. Alternatively you could also save to a flash memory device, or even easier, a properly formated USB memory device.   And welcome to the forum. Lots of help and info here
