Did you first setup a swap partition, and an ext2 type partition on your hard drive?
If DSL runs nicely from LiveCD, it should do fine installed as well..
You could also try a frugal-install, and take advantage of the smaller, lighter extensions for adding programs, recommended for this type of install.
With the full hdinstall, apt is recommended for adding programs, not myDSL. Programs installed from apt are usually much fatter, and require more resources.
