As far as i know the only difference is you have to carry an extra disk with you. The system itself is the same.
EDIT: since you mention poorman, there is a difference...if you're talking about running DSL from the CD. The disk needs to be accessed each time you start a new application, and since CDs are slower than harddrives it takes a little longer to start apps. Plus you need to run toram if you want to use the cdrom drive.
