Is this possible.

The simplest way would be to have a backup files modifying things such as .xinitrc and .xtdesktop.  However, depending on the size of the backups and the essay, it's quite possible that you won't be able to fit everything within the disk.
In this case you might be able to use a floppy for the backups, but this means needing a CD and a floppy.

Another option is to remaster the CD, removing enough from DSL to provide room for your essay (maybe take out a program or two which has nothing to do with your essay).

Still another option is using a larger disk, which removes the need for a remaster.

So, yes....simplest way would be create a new CD with your personal files on it.
