I've been in shops not booting a few late model laptops with dsl lately, though not this Presario (my recent posts). I know your pain.
Nevertheless, assuming your burns are ok, the conventional wisdom suggests it may be worth downloading and trying a few different dsl versions. As I understand it, I believe the last major change was at dsl 8.2.0, so maybe try a version(s) before this.
As a last resort: a laptop with this kind of grunt might run 'DSL Embedded' pretty well within WinXP.
I have heard that Knoppix favors Centrinos. Others have said Kanotix BHX tends to be more successful on laptops.
A request: please post the model of your Presario and more cpu details if you have them (eg Celeron M whatever), together with the versions of dsl that you try, and whether you're successful or not - this will be a great help to the collective knowledge base.
PS: If you haven't already, you could check google for a specific forum for your laptop on eg HP Notebooks or Notebook Review and post there re Knoppix.
