A quick fix is to add the boot option
'   host=mynewboxname   '    ...at boottime..

Lots of options at the boot prompt ...  
press f2 and f3 at boottime for a list ..

If your not running a LiveCD..

A frugal , pendrive, HDInstall, or CF install can use it too..
You can add the same text to a grub boot file (menu.lst) ,
or the append line in lilo.conf

I'm on HDinstall and I did the "lilo -v" thing too.
How do I check out my computer name in linux???
