Yep, this week, 1 year ago, the first version of DSL I downloaded came out - 0.4.10.

It was the 2nd distro I had ever tried. The first was a copy of Knoppix 3.0 that a friend gave me. I thought Knoppix was cool, and 3.1 was out so I went to download it, only to discover that downloading 700mb over a 21.4kbps dialup connection was impossible. After a little Googling (and discovering the wonder that is DistroWatch) I came across a fledgling distro, based on Knoppix, but that was only 50mb.

Needless to say, I was pretty skeptical. But I checked out the site, looked at the screenshots on the main page, and lurked on the forums (not for technical info, just to see if anyone would actually use an OS that was so small) and decided it might be woth the 3 full nights it would take to download. They didn't have cd burners at school yet, and I had not bought my laptop either, so home was the only choice :( .

So, 3 days later, when the download was done, I burned the iso to the cd, popped it in, rebooted, and ... nothing.

so I rebooted into windows again, made another cd, rebooted, and, nothing again. Then I noticed the little md5sum file under the iso file, googled for an md5sum app for windows, found md5_test.exe, and md5summed the iso.

Sure enough, I had a bad download. So i set it up for the next 3 nights (it actually took 4 this time) to download, md5summed it, and burned my 3rd attempt at making a DSL cd. popped it in, rebooted, and was setting up the Xserver, and playing with TuxNES, and browsing the 'net (slowly) with Dillo.

Pretty much been hooked ever since, even though the next release i downloaded was 0.5.3, followed by 0.6.1. But I've used every release since then!

Really wasn't interested in the community untill much later, but 0.4.10 kinda has a special place in my heart. My original 0.4.10 cd met it's demise in a cd-shatter inside a computer i was trying to fix, sometime between the time I downloaded 0.5.3 and 0.6.1.

I'd redownload it for nastalgia, but i guess I've gotten spoiles to the nice config scripts, etc that have been added since then.

actually, I might download it just to compare how far DSL has come since that tiny little page I discovered on DistroWatch.

Here's to another great year of efficient computing and damn small penguins!!! O_o

They say if you play a Microsoft CD backwards, you hear satanic messages. That's nothing, cause if you play it forwards, it installs Windows.

Yes...i remember,right year ago...I found DSL 0.3.4 in somebody's DC++ share
So I downloaded 0.4.9 and booted it at school :) everybody looked as asked "What kind of windows is this ? "
Then a day ago 0.4.10 was released...mouse didn't work so I carried 0.4.9 almost everywhere
