Dear Reidar,
Don't worry there was nothing wrong with the latex.dsl. It was removed, I'm afraid, as no matter what you do people just wouldn't run the little script it needed and folk just thought it didn't work.... The script was required as a link to one of the texmf directories, set in the miniroot, linked to something that didn't exist (/var/lib/texmf if I remember rightly). This might not be true in modern DSL versions but I'm afraid I haven't looked.
I use and enjoy a variety of packages BUT not all of these are immediately compatible with HD installed user, the 'where's the icon?' crowd, the `wrap it and stick it in opt' crowd and some may involve you typing in a command window.
Everything that required a script, deletions, anything `too much' in the way of a wrapper and some commandline based packages were removed.
Your suggestion of Antiword is excellent.
