The missing button text is something to do with bold fonts. If you delete or rename the liblgiskin-x.so file (the skinning library) then it'll draw the buttons in the system font (non-bold) and so you can see all the text. However it doesn't look as nice.
There is a topic about the connection issues here. If you want to add your 2c.
I might have to install DSL on a HD partition to check these issues out in person. I've personally tested Scribe on redhat and gentoo which had neither of these issues.
