hi all, i've got a gps reciever (compact flash with pcmcia adapter) for my laptop, and i know it kinda works in windows but i've never tried it on linux. two questions really, does dsl support nmea gps recievers and if it does can i use the mydsl button in emelfm to unpack and install a .tar.gz file containing the linux gps software?

I have used my GPS with the xastir program. Ham Radio App.
My GPS is an older model, with the serial cable connection.

I would guess that there IS software out there for linux that
will work with it.. sri, I'm not familiar with any titles.

and no, you can't take a source tarball, ( source.tar.gz ) ,
and "install" it like you do with the MyDSL extensions.
( app.dsl , app.tar.gz , app.uci )

Your source has to be compiled, like in any other linux distro.

I would love to get my hands on one of those GPS units..
I'll seek out one at the next hamfest, and then do some
playing around with it myself.

Wouldn't that be great for doing some geocaching ?

cheers for the speedy reply, is this xastir prog. you mentioned on myDSL?
if not can you point me in the direction of it and/or how to compile...
my other machine runs on suse9.1 so i just use rpms.

It is in the repository, 2 versions, I think..

But it is a ham radio app, and not much use to anyone else,
since you use it under a callsign.. and with a packet modem.
There are no "modules" in it to help in your quest..

You could fire it up, just for grins and giggles...
I get my live weather radar, and send/receive messages with it,
so it's a cool app anyway..

As far as compiling "anything" in DSL , take a deep breath,
and get ready for some deep reading in the forums about adding
that capability to this lil' 50MB distro.

For a brief overview,
the gcc1.dsl is your gcc, g++, and make utils.
the kernelsources.dsl are just that.
adding both of these to your install is a good start when
your ready to tackle building from sources.

right dont really understand that..
found a bit of kit on google called gpsDrive for linux which looks promising.
on the boot up, dsl finds the card and labels it ttys17 so if i install the software i'll be good to go?
dont have a clue how to compile so any help here would be much appreciated..
