Hi exa_gon!
Well it's quite simple really. The key to the backup/restore utility is the filetol.lst found in your home directory. When you make a backup everything on the filetool.lst is compressed into the backup.tar.gz file known as the backup-file. You can put it where you want but if you are using a usb-drive and want it to backup at boot without having to give an extra boot command just put it on sda1. I guess that is how your usb-drive is recognized in DSL. If you want to make DSL to automatically make a backup when you shutdown go to /opt/powerdown.sh and make sure the last line filetool.sh backup noprompt is uncommented (no # mark before this line) and that's all. Hope It all works out to your liking.
Have fun, meo
