To me, it makes little sense why you would have a specialized recovery tool (ddrescue) for damaged disk drives as part of the base livecd when the original base tool (GNU dd) is not included in the base livecd in order to save space. |
One good reason to have ddrescue in the base distro is that when you're presented with a machine that needs rescuing, you don't always have network access. Downloading a mydsl extension might not be an option.
(Cbagger01: As a nice side effect, I believe ddrescue doesn't have the 2GB limit of BusyBox dd, so including it should allow you to manipulate your large files.)
