If you tried imagemagick from the myDSL fluxbox menu, you are getting only a small part of the program.  As with most applications, the gui does not give you the full power of the tools available from the command line.  ImageMagick, particularly the "convert" and "conjure" tools, will probably allow you to do most of what you need:

Thanks for your input fellas, but imagemagick is not what I'm after. It is more focused on the modifying the contents of files. My main interest is managing 15,000 photo files - renaming, picking out photos for rotation (graphical interface needed) and then rotating them, picking out photos to move between directories (graphical interface needed), cataloging images, searching by catalogue terms and showing resultant images, etc. Sure imagemagick can do resizing, changing formats and other image editing features, but 'image processing' is the easy/minor part of what I am after.

I wasn't aware of GTKsee - thanks for pointing it out RoGuE_StreaK. hmmm, it does some of what I'm after.
