I've been trying to get a printer installed for over a week. Cups was suggested, as well as moving the discussion here.

I'm sure I'm making heavy weather of a simple task.

So far as downloaded 'cups-1.1.23-source.tar.gz into /ramdisk/home/dsl

I used:-

gzip -d cups-1.1.23-source.tar.gz

tar xvf cups-1.1.23-source.tar

moved to /cups-1.1.23 directory

read the install.txt

followed that and it came back with

'No acceptable C compiler found in $PATH'

Anyone with any clues on what I should be doing? This is not familiar territory for me and I get the feeling I spend a lot of time just 'poking in the dark'.

The object of the exercise it just to get hard copy of the 'Siap' spreadsheet printed. Otherwise DSL is not a useable system for me, whether this is achieved by running cups or buying a known compatible printer, I really don't mind.

So much else about DSL is great, shame to fall at this hurdle.

Why not just install it from the "System" area of the mydsl repository?

I tried that just now, it started to download it. And returned me to 'Download Extention Panel'

So presumably it's put it in /tmp (?)

What should I do next?

Right-Click to bring up the main menu.

I assume that there is a CUPS choice in the "MYDSL" section.

Otherwise, some people here that actually use it will need to give you more help.

But once you have CUPS up and running, you can configure it by starting up firefox and type

http://localhost:631

in the address bar, if I remember correctly.

If you need to create a root password, open up an XTerminal window and type:

sudo su
passwd

and enter a new password for user account "root" (IE: The super user account)
