Just a suggestion for other people trying to do this (like me), you don't have to do the independent dependencies. I believe you can do apt-get install e17 or apt-get install e16 and it will install the dependencies. I can't verify this because I have been using debian for the last forever and am now coming back to DSL (my lappy has too small a hard drive for debian to work effectively, and my cd drive hates 2.6 kernels and won't run with them for some reason).
