During shutdown there were a lot of errors (I think SCSI diskerrors) shown (repeating?) which I have interrupted with the CTRL-ALT-DELETE Keys.

That's not a good thing to do when shutting down. Remember that Linux is unmounting devices when shutting down. The signal from ctrl-alt-del overrides what the system is doing so your USB stick probably didn't unmount properly. That's probably why it's not loading now.

There was no other possibility, as it looked like the shutdown hanged in a loop and was showing a lot of SCSI diskerrors scrolling up on the screen.

Maybe I will try again with a new installed usb memory stick, but it does not make much sense as my network / internet is also not working anymore with DSL 4 or kernel 2.4.x on my new computer.

With the quick test I have done, I did not see the mounting tool in the lower right corner anymore. Has it been moved or cancelled? Are all the drives still standardisized as unmounted as it has been in previous DSL versions? I hope so.

Key: dsl-initrd just has all of the data.. i.e. KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX in the minirt so that it's all loaded to ram during boot.  Probably memory isn't a problem for you since you have that setup :)

thehatsrule:
I have 2 GB RAM. This should be sufficient.
Unfortunately I still do not know exactly what initrd means.
What is the difference to the ordinary version and how to use?
Thanks in advance.

I would like to keep this topic on specifics to dsl-4a1, and in particular bugs in the new user interface.

Specifics to an individual and on released versions of DSL or otherwise general questions and/or wish lists should be started in appropriate topic area(s).

I think it is well established that the newest of hardware may well not be supported with a 2.4 kernel. Lest we not forget that this very matter was discussed when I conducted the poll that resulted in dsl-4a1 being based on 2.4.34.

There is another, almost parallel topic, started under dsl-n (kernel 2.6)

Can we please move on and try to stay on-topic here.

I realize that there are likely not many who are interested in testing alpha level software. I do't want this entire topic to become a blog pertaining to the experiences of using new hardware. The initial questions and proposed solutions were appropriate but now it is move on.

Thanks.
