This is not neccessarily a DSL-4 specific question, but what should the permissions/ownership be on the various files/folders created for an ext2 USB boot? Does it matter? I cannot check those created by the USB-HDD install script since these are for a FAT installation:

/KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX
/mydsl
/lost+found
boot.cat
boot.msg
extlinux.conf
extlinux.sys
f2
f3
german.kbd
linux24
logo.16
minirt24.gz

I'm not sure this is the right place for this question but here goes:

In dsl 3.4 I was not not able to create a usb pendrive system using the apps/tools/install to usb-zip or hdd when the usb device is a 20G usb harddrive. Before I get started testing 4.0, could someone please advise me as to the possibility of using a "real" usb hdd in 4.0. The usb-zip approach works great for usb sticks since it automatically creates two partitions. Once the second partition is formated with mkfs it becomes a versatile persistent storage area for things like xampp ( /opt and /home). It would be great if dsl 4.0 allowed the usb-zip second partition to be any size.

Assuming that DSL would treat a USB HD as a USB stick, you could always install DSL manually - this works for large (>512MB) USB sticks formatted FAT, FAT32 and ext2 - then you can create partitions(s) to suit your needs. Note that you would need to use syslinux or extlinux from one of the DSL extensions if you wish to use FAT32 or ext2.
