Lets see, since /home is inside DSL, and DSL in on the USB device, therefore ... If you mean a writeable area, since it is not a good idea to run a live filesystem on a USB device. Probably the easiest solution is to have two partitions. One for the read only DSL and the other for the backup/restore. That way it is under the control of the user when writes occur. It is in a way simulating a floppy. Then select device for backup sda2. Then use the boot time option to restore your setting. The end result is everything is on a single USB device.
