There's a nice write up on the IBM site about lilo, grub and the boot up process. It's not DSL specific and you may have to register with IBM (it's free). Here's the link LPI exam 102 prep... Topic 106 boot up
The DSL frugal install has the option for GRUB. I've used both LILO and GRUB and while both will work I find GRUB to be easier to modify.
