So you have a HD then?  If you have free/open space, you can use cfdisk to create a swap partition.

If your drive is full, it is possible to use parted to shrink a partition, but you can't be using the partition when you do it.  Last time I did that was from a Knoppix CD, and shrank a 80g partition to 10g without issues.
