I'm currently running the embedded version of DSL in windows 2000. Which sucks. I wonder is it possible to install DSL from an embedded install? I seem to see an install command in there, but is that only for USBs? If that's so I need to figure out if my BIOS can boot from an USB flash, and do a backup of the content I usually keep stored on my USB. :O I thought I might dual boot DSL and Windows 2K until I can get all the Linux distro CDs my friend is sending me (yeah I know, I'm testing the distro waters right now because I've only experienced Ubuntu. Humor me?)

So um, how can I do this without a CD burner or a proper CD? The one DSL CD I have was burnt improperly and even though it loads, it loads with many errors. I'd rather not risk installing a bad version of DSL.

I also have the ISO burnt to a disk, but not as a disc image but as an iso file. :O

Also, another question. How do I get rid of that freaking CPU monitor thing on the desktop, which I don't need, and how do I save my settings so I don't have to change my theme every single time I load DSL? :(

Thanks!

I haven't tried the embedded version but I think the DSL store has CD's and thumb drives already pre-installed.

You can do some things with the .iso using a floppy boot disk (search the wiki and forum on "poorman")

You can turn the CPU info off by commenting out a line in the .xintial? file (search forum on "torsmo")

Saving settings can be done with the backup tool in the control panel.  Just have a spot on your USB or harddrive for it.

No clue about embedded installs, I'm sorry to say.

I will echo the suggestion of purchasing a CD from the developers, if you absoluetly need one.

As for removing the CPU infor, which is called torsmo, open the file /home/dsl/.fluxbox/xinitrc and on the line which begins with "torsmo", simply put a # in front of it and save the file.  Restart X to have you change take effect.  You can do the samed thing with the "dillo" line to remove the "Getting Started" page at boot.

To save your settings, simply open the menu and click on the Backup/Restore item located in System.  Choose a location to save your settings to.  When booting, use the bootcode "dsl restore=location".

Says no in http://damnsmalllinux.org/wiki....rive.3F

However, it actually may be possible if you pass qemu your physical drive, so you can directly mount it... don't think anyone's tried it though.
I know vmplayer (or was it vmware?) has been seen to do a usb-install.
