Openbox is a pig and it doesn't open folders, etc. That's the job of a file manager, not a window manager. I don't know with which distro you've run into openbox, but you're most likely using rox as a file manager in it. MyDSL has a GTK1 version of rox and it works quite well with jwm.
Comparisons:
SIZE openbox 3312 jwm 416
RSS openbox 7780 jwm 2656
VSIZE openbox 11676 jwm 4736
LIBRARIES openbox 31 jwm 19 http://gilesorr.com/wm/memory.html
FWIW, rox is sizable compared to dfm in terms of RAM use, disk space, cpu cycles, and inodes (especially if you use rox as it was designed with AppDirs).
