I just noticed the response from Brian AwPuch on the dual boot question....

But in step 1 where you resize the Windows partition - How do you
do that?  Do you fire up Windows and then run some partitioning
utility?  What utility is that?  When you install DSL into the
empty partition you made how do you identify this empty
partition???  HOw does the DSL installation find it and not
e.g. wipe out the Windows installation....??

All the best

Michael Fothergill

To resize partitions you can use FDISk (booting from an XP/2K floppy you made as a rescue diskette) OR Partition Magic OR QTParted works (which is what i used from another linux distro called Mepis).

QtParted will tell you the name & # of each partition, so write it down.  The format for linux is hd(letter#). IE:  the first partition on the first drive is hda1, next partition on 1st drive is hda2...etc... next drive is hdb#...

The script to install dsl asks for the right partition & Drive #, so write down whatever it is when you're in QTParted or whatever you're using.

I also recommend using QTParted to resize your partitions.

How to get it?

Download the latest KNOPPIX version and burn it to CD.  Follow the instructions.  It is good to run a DEFRAG and a CHKDSK in MSWindows before rebooting and doing a resize.

Hi

to resize your partition without loosing any data you can use "parted". If, like me, you have to boot from floppy only, try the RIP (Recovery Is Possible) floppy  version (http://www.tux.org/pub/people/kent-robotti/looplinux/rip/). To write the *.bin file under windows use rawwrite2.exe.
Boot from floppy, launch parted, resize partition 1 and you're done. No need to defrag. I did it on my old portege 3010ct...

Good luck!

Hello-
I just did this on my wife's older PIII laptop.
I used Partition Magic to resize her Windows partition first. I initially got errors from Partition Magic, but after de-fragging and chkdsk /r/f, I was able to resize the partition.
I then created a 256MB swap partition and a 3.3GIG ext 2 linux partition.
I followed the hd install instructions from this site, and the install went fine including the liloinstall portion. It picked up on the Windows partition so I now have a working dual boot system.
This is a very impressive distro. It is the only one that picked up on the wireless PC card too. Very nice indeed.
