I have done some research for you, and it might be that the problem (or one of the problems) has to do with your hardware, i.e. your Dell Inspiron. If you visit this link:

you see that several people seem to have had problems installing linux on this computer. I guess you should take a closer look at the two guys who have tried to install Debian on it, since DSL is based on Debian. Perhaps they have found some tricks.
In our office we got new computers last summer, and I got a Dell Optiplex 270. Tried to install Linux (Debian, SuSE, Knoppix, DSL...) on it, but I really couldn't make it work. Seems like an issue with the graphics card Dell used in it. So, I had to stick with my older computer, where Linux is running happily. Moral is that not all computers are happy with Linux, unfortunately, but there are lots of smart guys out there, and some of them might have found a solution to a similar problem.
Also, I thought DSL had problems dual-booting with XP, but I might be wrong about that....
