Hi. I just redid my frugal install using lilo, i like the grub bootloader, but the lilo frugal instal seemed morerobust. I like how it is working, but have one problem. I have windows on hda1 and DSL on hda2 Lilo will only boot into DSL, there are no other options. How can i add windows as a boot option?

In my opinion, the situation you 'just' described
illuminates the robustness and ease of configuring I
find available to me in the GRUB bootloader.

While many additional installs, or bootcodes can be added to your lilo.conf
file, and lilo rerun "with the proper commands" ....
Depending on the condition of the MBR, the partition table order,
and the skill of the operator, tragedy can occur ..
(The dreaded 9's or L's , or a bunk install, rendering your
new DSL install, and any other installs ( i.e. XP ) unaccessible.

With the grub bootloader.. Once "ONE" successful write to your
MBR is complete, editing and adding boot options is a very
straightforward and easy-to-understand affair,
with NO REWRITING of your MBR !

It makes adding installs for other distros to your bootloader,
or variations to your existing install, very painless..
(i.e. If your newly added one has incorrect syntax, and fails,
simply reboot, choose another option, and repair the bad syntax.)

Adding a windows install to it is a breeze.

And their is comfort knowing that if you made even one mistake
or typo in your setup, it can quickly and easily be fixed,
without hosing your entire boot process..

Just my thoughs on the subject..
I use both bootloaders in my systems..
Once I have lilo working nicely, I 'usually' don't like to mess with it.

Oh, and an answer to your question... add these lines,

other=/dev/hda1
       label=dos
       table=/dev/hda

Then rerun lilo
lilo -C /path/to/lilo.conf

I would have too agree, after hours spent surfing the net finding only partial answers to the lilo configuration problem, espicialy in relation to DSL (when i updated my lilo.conf on hda3/boot, then ran lilo, it told me that i hadnt changed etc/liloconf). So i decided to stick with grub. so far it has done everything i wanted and is simple.

Hi.
I've done a frugal install and I've another problem: if I try to modify the lilo.conf the system tells me that the file is readonly (using root user...)
So, I've tried using chmod command (by root) but the system tells me that the filesystem is not writeable...... and so I can't modify lilo.conf.........
any help.....??

thank's

I'm having the same problem.  I thought that running lilo specifying a different lilo.conf ...
Code Sample
cp /etc/lilo.conf /home/dsl/lilo.conf
chmod 755 /home/dsl/lilo.conf
nano /home/dsl/lilo.conf and make changes
lilo -C /home/dsl/lilo.conf

This doesn't work as lilo is trying to write a new map file to a read-only folder (/boot?) and you get a fatal error.  Doesn't appear to be an easy way around it.
