YAY got my Hercules Fortissimo II to work!
OK I've lost the audio patch out lead, but I was after the optical anyway! Followed the instructions in the alsa-debs package and sought guidance fromhere
But basically ran the setup scripts as root and as normal user run alsamixer, noting the 'm' key was mute, spacebar enable/disabled some 'capture' settings and of course up/down arrows/pgup.pgdown to change the volume.
To test the optical out I've got my MD portable 'recording' from the SPDIF out (I shoved a blank disc in and I've set it to 'Pause Record')
