divx, xvid, etc: Mplayer and Xine both handle these quite well straight out of the repository. If you have an issue with some lesser used codec, try downloading codecpak.dsl.
wmv: I haven't had any success with these. I believe you can download the drivers and point Mplayer and Xine to the directory. I'm not sure, but from what I've read I believe both wmv and real codecs are in the win32 form and Mplayer and Xine read them as is. But then again I'm probably wrong. I just know they aren't free (as in speech) codecs and therefore aren't distributable by the usual means.
