I couldn't get sound to work either until I haphazardly stumbled upon the alsaconf and sndconfig tools from the debian apt-get repository.  There should be a line added to the alsa description in MyDSL that says something like "if this script doesn't work, you might have better luck with alsaconf, or if that doesn't work, try removing the alsa packages and using sndconfig to automatically set up OSS drivers."
