still can't get host renamed. so far i've edited the lilo.conf file and added "host=name_i_want" in the append section and ran lilo. after reboot, nothing is changed. but, if i boot with cd and at prompt i type "dsl host=name_i_want", when x starts it says "Host=name_i_want ip_addy". i've looked around and the ways that are mentioned don't seem to work for me. anyone know something different? is there another file i need to edit?

What was your lilo command?

Make sure you edit the correct lilo.conf and use lilo -C /path/to/your/lilo.conf or else it will use /etc/lilo.conf

the lilo.conf file i edited was /etc/lilo.conf, thats the only one i know of or could find. this is debian hdd install, so that should be the one i needed to edit, right?

this is what i have in the append section:
append="hda=scsi hdb=scsi hdc=scsi hdd=scsi hde=scsi hdf=scsi hdg=scsi hdh=scsi apm=power-off nomce noapic host=Linux "
