OK made a little progress on this, but still not working.    I can now get to:

Installed ndis drivers:
sis162u driver present, hardware present

ran:

modprobe ndiswrapper

system log shows:

ndiswrapper version 1.14 loaded

Crunch comes when I run:

iwconfig

which returns just:

lo     no wireless extensions.


No mention of wlan0 or any other entries.

Any clues as to what I try next, or have I missed something?

I think you need to configure your network first.  If you do not know how to do it from cmdline, you can use the wlancardconfig (or something like that) from DSLPanel.
