I'm having the same problem here, and I also want to configure the computer for someone else who doesn't know much about computers.

I've tried three different modems. The only one that I managed to get working is an external one that I had to plug in the ttyS0 port. But that's where I need my mouse, so I can't use it. There's another serial port (a 24 pin), but I can't get the modem detected there.

The other two modems I tried with were internal.
One of them, was an IDE card, and I don't know where to find it in /dev ; the other is a PCI one, which is listed in lspci as "Communication controller: Motorola: Unknown device 5608".

Any idea?

You tried microcom to test ports?
Are the other ports enabled in BIOS?
Are the irq conflicts? Check with dmesg | grep -i irq

I did all the things that you asked except for using microcom...cause I didn't know about it.

So, I went back to the DSL box and went through it all again, and there isn't anything that I can say that I did differently, but I guess that there must have been because I now have internet with a external modem....Sweet.

Thanks for you help.

I dropped off the computer today.  The guy was so happy.  He is truly a beginner.  I had to show him how to turn it on.
I am going to set up a mirror machine at home so that I can set up more extensions and learn more about DSL.

Thanks again..
